Phineas and Ferb

The show follows the adventures of stepbrothers Phineas Flynn and Ferb Fletcher, who live in a wacky town called Danville in the tri-state area. Their older sister, Candace Flynn, is obsessed with “busting” their schemes and ideas, and usually calls their mother to report the boys’ activities. Meanwhile, the boys’ pet platypus, Perry, acts as a secret agent for an all-animal government organization called the “O.W.C.A.” (Organization Without a Cool Acronym), fighting Dr. Heinz Doofenshmirtz

My census: This is Disney’s golden ticket. No really, in my years it is rare that I would ever find cartoons that do things right. This show is true idol among youngsters and not only them. I admit to myself watching this cartoon at times. Featuring lovable and adorable characters, a humorously ironic plot, running gags, incredibly catchy theme tune and of course the odd, off-beat, and sometimes innocent humor – this show doesn’t just get laughs out of the youngster, but audience of all ages.

The Boondocks

The Boondocks is an animated television show which runs on Cartoon Network’s late night block – Adult Swim.

The show portrays a family of two brothers Huey and Riley living with their Grandfather in the suburbs. Apparently the show has history as first running as cartoon comic strip before the show premiered in 2005.

Perhaps most notable, the show has been made infamous for controversial subjects and the manner it presents them. The show features heavy language and dialogue, but laughable and flamboyant characters. The show maintains a consistent TV-Mature rating and has been challenged in the past. There seem to be just as many critics of the show as there are supporters.

Some take kindly of the show as nothing more of a satire to society, while others view it as vulgar and stereotypical – only perpetuating the biases it portrays.

Despite the criticism and challenges to become more appropriate, the show trudges on with it’s blatant stereotypes, ugly cultural references, and its infamous use of the ‘n-word.’
Knowing this one has to wonder about the show’s creator Aaron McGruder.

Does the show serve as cultural satire – an exaggerated middle finger to the world or is it something more. A powerful show portraying a one-sided view of black culture to challenge the authoritative mainstream entertainment.

I say it’s a little of both. Despite the vulgarities, the show is quite insightful looking into subjects other shows wouldn’t dare touch and showing depictions that stray away from the real stereotypical portrayals of blacks in other cinema. We can only wonder.

King of the Hill

King of the Hill is an American animated series created by Mike Judge and Greg Daniels, that ran from January 12, 1997 to September 13, 2009 on Fox. It centers on the Hills, a small-town Methodist family in the fictional town of Arlen, Texas. It attempts to retain a realistic approach, seeking humor in the conventional and mundane aspects of everyday life.

The show is nothing less of that. It’s set with exceptionally realistic characters, settings, and plots. What I love about this cartoon is that even if you don’t relate to the characters, you can relate to the situation. The show is unpretentious, following an average family and average family man Hank Hill. Despite his apparent laid-back, redneck-like nature; Hank is reliable, level-headed (most of the time), and has resolve.

King of the Hill provides an odd reminiscence of similar family cartoon The Simpsons. Shows like these offer relatable situations and the standard family man. Hank Hill and Homer Simpson share an odd relationship in this perspective – as the perfect embodiment of a family man.

Viewers will get sucked into the strong story plot and be drawn to the lovable characters. While still getting in the occasional chuckle from some of the sometimes absurd banters of the rednecks’ lifestyle. You’ll be chuckling while slapping your head saying, “oh no he didn’t just say that.”

Not only is humor placed in as well, but placed properly. This is hard to say for a lot shows these days.

I don’t know about you, but what I love about this show is that it’s lovable. It’s nostalgic, “relatable”, ridiculous at times, but at the end you’ll be finding yourself attached from beginning to end.

The show has stopped airing on FOX to make room for The Cleveland Show, but still thankfully runs in syndication on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim.
